In 2006, three organizations active in Switzerland in the field of migrant children, namely the International Institute for Child Rights (IDE), the Swiss Foundation of the International Social Service (ISS) and Terre des hommes – Children’s Aid (Tdh), decided to join efforts to improve the management and monitoring of unaccompanied minors (UAM) in Switzerland, creating the "Alliance for the rights of migrant children".

Between 2006 and 2016, ADEM has carried out various activities:

At first, ADEM mainly focused its commitment on children in asylum proceedings. Given the estimate of an increase of young people living illegally in Switzerland, the target group was then broadened to separated children and young people, whether in proceedings or without legal status.
